Capability Enhancement Schemes


Capability enhancement schemes are programs designed to improve the skills and abilities of individuals, often with a focus on preparing them for employment or enhancing their overall development. These schemes typically cover a range of areas, including soft skills, communication, analytical abilities, and professional development.

1. Soft skills development

Soft skills are interpersonal skills to develop different patterns of behaviours. It enhances individual’s personality, and characterizes how to build good relations with other people in their career. A Soft skills development Scheme is developed by Dr. PDNI to train the nursing students and help them focus on the application of skill-set for the purpose to make a better career. Soft skill empowers nursing student to collaborate for better teamwork, efficiency, and productivity.

We conduct soft training program for the nursing students like Interpersonal skills, time management, communication abilities, group dynamics, social skills, higher order thinking, positive self-concept, goal orientation, stress management, teamwork, critical thinking skills etc.

The objectives of soft skill development include:

    1. To inculcate the leadership qualities amongst the nursing students.
    2. To imbibe team-building skills.
    3. To develop a good perspective towards building a positive pattern and good behaviour.
2) Language and communication skills development

Linguistic skills and Communication skills hold the foundation of personal growth for health care professionals. As the students come from different social / regional background, the language and communication become the barrier with the patients when they practice in clinical Training these students is utmost important for better communication with patients.

Dr. PDNI organizes linguistic and communication skills programs for the nursing students like communication skills, functional english, psychometric assessment, local language training, etc. amongst students. Marathi language sessions conducted on weekends for students to get well versed with vernacular language while dealing with patients.

The objectives of language and communication skill development program include:

    1. To understand the methods, they use their energy levels to study effectively.
    2. To help them learn the regional language.
    3. To help them learn how to manage themselves better
3) Yoga and wellness

Yoga and wellness schemes for nursing students play a crucial role in handling stress especially during the period of examination. Teaching and making them practice yoga is one of the best methods to deal with exam stress. A certified Yoga instructor and college faculty conduct awareness programs and practice sessions regarding yoga and Meditation for students and staff.

Yogasana competition and celebration & commemoration of international yoga day on 22nd June is conducted in every year, and foundation course for fresh entrants entails one hour of yoga and meditation classes often. All departments emphasize on the implementation of yoga and wellness for the nursing students. The objectives of yoga and wellness scheme include:

    1. To enable students to have good health
    2. To help them improve concentration and memory to perform better in examination
    3. To make them practice mental hygiene and calmness
4) Analytical skills development

Health care professionals require good analytical skill to deal day-to-day clinical practice effectively. It describes our ability to understand and solve problems using the available information. Analytical skill development programs sharpen the nursing students as a health care professional and strengthen them for long-term success through analytical thinking abilities.

We organise periodic research methodology workshops for students and teachers, and is made compulsory for all PG nursing students and teachers. Student engagement to problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, analytical skills are embedded in regular curricular transactions. Learning research methodology and biostatistics as a part of skill-based training improves student’s research oriented analytical skills. The objectives of analytical skills development include:

    1. To help them learn analytical skills for interpreting data
    2. To make them understand and develop critical thinking skills
    3. To help them learn the application of analytical skills in clinical practice
5) Human value development

A nurse should be a good human being for being a successful health care professional. Values are essential for positive behaviour and actions in our daily lives especially in health care setting. They are formed on the basis of interests, choices, needs, desires and preferences. Basic values are truth, honesty, loyalty, love and peace, because they bring out the fundamental goodness of human beings and society at large.

Value education classes are conducted for all the nursing students throughout the year for enhancement of positive behaviour and actions. Guidance and counselling cell is functioning to help students to gain insight into origins and development of emotional difficulties, leading to increased capacity to take rational control over feeling and emotions. Guidance and counselling impart sensitisation sessions regarding values in family, professional life, self-development, universal values, human values, temporal values, character development, role of spirituality, etc. The objectives of human value development include:

    1. To incorporate moral values that ought to guide the profession
    2. To create awareness, conviction & commitment to values for improving the quality of life
    3. To imbibe positive thinking ability
6) Personality and professional development

Personality holds the key for development of self-belief, that in-turn generate self-confidence. Student’s personality is multi-factorial comprising of thoughts, behaviour & feelings. Thus, development of student personality is a responsibility of the institution.Professional development generates with greater professional exposure but it does not ensure inculcation of professional ethics. Thus, health care professionals must be equipped with newer knowledge through various schemes implemented by the institution.

Dr. PDNI conducts personality development programs like habits of highly effective people, clinical reasoning skills, leadership, managerial skills etc. Various personality and professional development programmes like college induction at the time of admission, clinical Induction during clinical posting, internship Induction etc. are standard practices for the nursing students. Students are part of official committees apart from the student council, wherein they get a chance to represent their batch, voice their choices and concerns thereby getting experiential learning regarding leadership and communication skills.
The objectives of personality and professional skill development include:

    1. To create awareness amongst students on how to Improve work-life balance
    2. Build and Improve Professional Relationships
    3. To inspire and help them define their personal pathway to career success.
7) Employability skills development

The greatest education is not only to teach skill, attitude and knowledge, but also to teach employability skill, wherein the nursing students shall have the ability to survive on the skills learned & practiced over a period of time in the institution. Employability skill comprises of taking initiatives, showing interest, adapting to new working conditions, communicating well, following discipline and striving for the growth of the employer.

Employability skill development schemes are conducted by the institution regularly for overall growth of nursing students. The placement cell of the institute organizes various career guidance and counselling sessions for outgoing batch of students throughout the year. In addition, Alumni association regularly conducts sessions regarding career counselling, career growth opportunities, on job training opportunities and developmental road maps along with sharing of experiences. Value added courses on ‘Resume writing’, ‘Scientific writing’, appearing for Interviews etc. are organised by placement cell for all streams of nursing students. Lecture from technical or professional experts, college visits and placement drives are organised for nursing students.
The objectives of employability skills development include:

    1. To learn social skills and attitude to work together with others
    2. To create empowered high force work power in a competitive world
    3. To develop high order thinking skills
Implementation of schemes

For easy process, the above schemes are divided into three groups. Group A scheme for first-year students, Group B scheme for second-year students and Group C scheme for third and final year students.
Enrolment compulsory to attend the capability enhancement schemes in the institution.
